Is it normal practice for employees to tell their employer that they are looking for another job?

Someone suggested on here that I am being "snubbed" by my current employer (who I am leaving next Friday) as I didn't tell them I was planning on leaving!!!

In my experience people rarely tell their employers they are looking for alternative employment as it makes for a difficult working relationship.
Reply:Depends on how good or valuable you think you are to your employer. If your good they won't want to lose you. However if your wrong you might find your boss holding the door open for you as you leave.

The decision is yours as they say.
Reply:No but once you are on to a pretty sure offer from another firm then you could say that you are anticipating leaving. As long as you give sufficient notice so you can be replaced and serve out your notice, you are not expected to tell them you are planning on moving. Maybe your informer is jealous you are off.
Reply:What are you bothering to ask us for? You have made up your mind what you want to do, and have done it.
Reply:You must give them notice, but looking for another job can be reason for termination.
Reply:You don't have to tell them you are looking, you only need to hand in your notice when you find something.
Reply:It would only be normal to tell your employer when you had acquired another job.

To tell them any earlier would only make your position untenable because the employer (who is doing you the favour, by employing you) would feel that you were not worth bothering with.
Reply:Two weeks notice is the typical amount of notice given. You usually only inform your employer once you have a job offer from another company. Also, you should prepare for the fact that when you give your two week notice they may just tell you to leave that same day. In some cases where I was contract and they knew my contract was ending anyways I only gave one week notice, but two weeks is the standard.
