I am looking for a new job, and do not want my current employer to get their hopes up as far as me staying around. The company is wacko, the people here are two faced, and it all together is not a honest company. If I inform them I am looking for a new job so that they have time to prepare to fill my position, can they fire me? Even if Im not looking while I am at work?
Can you get fired for telling your employer your looking for a new job?
Do not tell them you are looking, just is not good for you, tell them when you have found something, they might not fire you but as stated will not look good and might screw with you. Best played poker hands are held close to the chest. Do not tell anyone
Reply:Depends on the state, most states you can be fired for any reason, besides descrimination! So I would only give the required two weeks, find a job, explain to the new employer you need to give 2 weeks, so you won't be able to start for two weeks. Then go from there, at least if they fire you at that point you have a job, and maybe the new one will let you start right away after all!
Reply:If you are in a "work-at-will" job (which most are) then you can leave for any reason, and they can let you go for the same. So the answer is yes, they can fire you if you decide to tell them, or give notice.
The general exceptions to this are if you are under contract or part of a union and the agreement speaks specifically to giving notice.
Reply:If you work in an "At Will" state, they could - even if you give 2 weeks notice - they could say "Leave right now" and there is nothing you can do, if you fear that, wait as long as you can and to give notice and be prepared to possibly be told to clean out your desk that day.
Reply:depends how much notice you are required to give
you can claim dentist appointments while going for interviews.
You don't have to tell them until you have found something.
there are a lot of unemployed people out there just now, more by the day as companies go under.
So if you don't need to tell them ................ don't
Reply:I'm talking out of personal experience.
My Dad, who was still on probation, got fired just because his employer *heard* he was looking for another job.
He was still on probation though, I'm not sure if it works on normal circumstances.
Reply:dont tell them... look for a job and find one first... after getting one tell them u found a new job and ur giving them two weeks... if they want to fire u before the two weeks, tell them thank you and be happy with your new opportunity at your new job.
Reply:They can take your early resignation. You did in fact resign just by stating you are looking for another job. So yes they can ask you to leave early.
Reply:yes
Be happy that you at least have a job - many don't (including me).
Look for another job, but keep it very QUIET - don't tell ANYONE!!
