When should I start looking for a government job?

I am working for the government and my year term ends this summer. I'm in my early 20's and will have a MA in organization development %26amp; HR soon. I know the gov is great for young dedicated people. Should I start 6 months befoe my term ends, 3 months? Should I limit myself to the gov or also look at private sector? Any suggestions or advice related to securing a gov job? Thanks!
When should I start looking for a government job?
Log onto the different government websites and post your resume's there. Figure out what part of the gov't or private sector you want to work in and go from there.

I would start looking now because it takes quite a while for the companies to peruse the resume, and with government jobs, you might get a bite or two, and then you have to go through the background process, even though you're currently working for them. Every agency operates differently and not every agency speaks to each other. (You'd think in this day and age there'd be inter-agency courtesy, but that doesn't exist.) Good luck on your search.
Reply:If you are talking about the 'Federal Government', get in as SOON as you can. They have the greatest benefits, especially the T.S.P. progam. And then there is the world travel....living in different parts of the world, not just visiting them.....if you apply for the jobs there. And the salaries ain't bad either! Pay raises are automatic, plus cost of living raises. And when was the last time you heard of a federal employee being fired or laid-off. Go for it....and good luck. Study hard! (I think the private sector is more cut-throat and back stabbing. That is how they get their promotions....make you look bad!)
Reply:Seeing how you are already working for the government you already have your "foot in the door" and it should make it easier to go from there. The government offers a wide range of jobs, pay is good, there will be a job as long as the government exists, and they have great benefits. As far as looking for a job you might start looking around for positions coming up and talking to people from different agencies. I'm not really sure if this has been any help but I work for the Forest Service and we post our jobs as soon as they come available. Hope to have helped you. As far as interagency with the Federal Government we already have one. It's for wildland firefighting. Its an Interagency out of Idaho, I believe, and it combines all of the different Departments and Bureaus of the U.S. Government.
Reply:You should look in both sectors, private and gov. Right now is the time to look in the private sector. They have all done their budgets for next year and are hiring. As for public, they do their budgets in May/June. Both hire during the year but they are just replacing people who have left. I've worked in both sectors.
Reply:I start a job at the VA in two weeks. I applied back in March. Get on the OPM website (USAJOBS.COM) now and start looking. You know that Uncle Sugar doesn't do anything fast.
