My dad recently moved to NYC from other country. He has vast experience in computers and accounting. However, as he didn't have great English he had to work random jobs as construction worker. He definitely picked his language skills, but doesn't know where to start looking for opportunities.
Any clues? Financial or computer industries are the target here.
Recently immigrated. Where to start looking for job?
Wants ads, for a start. Just check the newspaper.
Also, try headhunters, professional firms that match workers with employers, and the job seeker does not pay (the hiring company pays).
Is he open to travel? Alberta, Canada is BOOMING and needs workers. Send him there. Once he gets some experience over here he will be more marketable.
Reply:With his background there will be plenty of job opportunities. Aside from answering job wanted ads (which is a good thing), he should also consider temp agencies. The good thing about temp agencies is that if they know you have a degree/ skills in a specific area they can market your skills and obtain a job for you. They can get you working with a company that you otherwise wouldn't have had an opportunity to interview with. And, so after doing temp project work it will give him more experience and it could even turn into something permanent. Either way it's a good opportunity. But always search for and contact agencies that pay top dollar. And to do that, browse the job boards (careerbuilder, etc..) to give you an idea of what these agencies are paying for those type of positions.
