I am interested in working for old people in a residential home. Do I need to obtain some formal training before I start work in the UK? Please advise what sort of qualification you need and where.
I am looking for a job as care assistant with no experience or qualifications in this field.?
Hi Jay,
just like what other people have said, - you don't need any qualifications or training to get started as this will be provided on the job. there will also be opportunities to undertake NVQ in care.
Have you considered working with adults with learning disabilities, it tends to pay more than elderly care, more training is provided and better prospects of progression if you work hard
Reply:Look through your local yellow pages and phone around the nursing homes and ask if they have vacancies, most of them dont ask for qualifications.
Reply:Check Jobcentre website alot of Care Assistant jobs don't need qualifications to start but would need to be able to work towards NVQ, also pass your CRB check.

Reply:i am not sure ya really need qualifications but they will def do a police check hope this helps good luck
Reply:I also did not have any qualifications in care work when i went into my first care job. Have been in my present care job for last 4years. Most places give you the necessary training in the job.It is a must with the care commission that we are properly trained to do our jobs. Any qualifications you may need will be done while in your employment.
Reply:I started as a care assistant with no qualifications at all. Employers will generally train you to NVQ level. When you 1st start they will give you an induction, and in house training in all aspects of the job (health and safety, manual handling, fire safety etc) You will have to undergo a criminal records check and POVA (protection of venerable adults) but they will usually pay for that 2.
You just need to show your dedicated and trustworthy with a good heart and patience. Also remember that it does take alot of hard work, time, and at times a very strong stomach. But I can tell you its all worth it. Check the jobcentre website for care jobs in your area, as theres always lots on there.
Good luck.
Reply:Be prepared to deal with copious amounts of faecal matter, vomit and various other body fluids.
Reply:Care givers are in short supply. I believe most places will pay you to train and help you with the certification. They may also require you to commit to a certain amount of hours in return for this, or not.
Good luck.
