I am looking for a job in Advertising?

I have lived in San Antonio for over a year now and I am having trouble looking for a job in Advertising. I hold a bachelors degree. I have searched on Monster jobs as well as Career Builder. I have taken classes on designing billboards and I also took a class on special events and promotions. Any help would be appreciated.
I am looking for a job in Advertising?
Have you checked out San Antonio's craigslist? I'm in Vancouver Canada and a lot of ad agency jobs get put up on craigslist. I also suggest looking for any local Advertising and/or Marketing associations - let them know you're looking for work and ask them if they can refer you to good agencies in town (preferably those who are hiring).

Good luck
Reply:There is an advertising head hunting and job listing website. It is called talent zoo. (www.talentzoo.com). You will be able to see advertising jobs posted within the market of your choice. Registration is free, and it's good to upload your resume, sometimes agencies will not post and go through the talent zoo staff and they search the posted resumes and will contact you if there are any opportunities that are a good fit that are not posted online. Good Luck!
Reply:As I see it, you've got a few things working against you.

1. San Antonio is not exactly an advertising hotbed. I'm sure it probably has a couple of agencies, but I'll bet money they're small and local. That means you can expect zero pay, terrible accounts (think, local car dealerships if they're advertising at all), and no opportunities for advancement.

2. You seem to lack focus. You've taken classes on designing billboards? Really? What's that? Who teaches (or takes?) a class on designing billboards. It seems weirdly random and specific at the same time. If you're a creative at an agency you're going to be expected to work on TV, print, probably online as well. And I'm assuming you're looking to be an art director based on the class you took but I can't tell. Are you a copywriter? I don't know.

3. The special events and promotions class confuses me. It takes me back to my original question - what is it you want to do? A bachelor's degree is irrelevant. It's the price of entry. You don't mention your major, so I have to guess it's not relevant to advertising - like marketing or communications or business. You need to tailor your experience and your education toward your goal. But you don't have a clear goal so I don't know what you want.

If I were you I'd do a few things. First focus on the part of the business you want to work in. If it's creative, you have to apply for one of the schools - Miami Ad School, Creative Circus, or Portfolio Center. If it's account management, then I would spin my experience toward business and be willing to take an entry level job at a media company to gain experience in advertising. Most account people without MBAs got in through media. You might also want to seriously consider online advertising. The money and the resources are flowing out of general advertising into online at an alarming rate. Finally, I'd get the hell out of San Antonio and find a place with more opportunities - Houston, Dallas, LA...
